RE: Planned Industrial Action by the National Union of Teachers (NUT) on Tuesday 05 July 2016

You will no doubt be aware that members of the National Union of Teachers (NUT) have called a one-day strike on Tuesday 05 July 2016. I am writing to inform you that due to the number of teachers at Thomas Adams School that are members of one of this union, we will be closed to Years 7, 8 and 9 students all day on Tuesday 05 July 2016.

Years 10 and 12 will be in as usual.

Staff not participating in the industrial action will be working in school on the day of the strike; however teachers are normally instructed by their own unions not to undertake the duties normally carried out by their striking colleagues, which would include covering teaching and covering supervision at breaks and lunchtime. I have therefore reluctantly taken the decision to close the school to some students on health and safety grounds.

I am writing this letter early to allow parents/carers time to make any necessary alternative childcare arrangements. However, should the strike be called off in time, we would, naturally, reverse the decision to close. I will write to all parents immediately should this be the case, as well as posting an announcement on our website.

Apologies for any inconvenience but there is nothing else we can do to ensure the safety of the students.

Yours sincerely
