On Tuesday, our Year 9 English students enjoyed a careers talk led by two inspiring guests: Alun Thorne and Peter ‘The Speaker’.

Alun Thorne is a former journalist who now runs his own communications consultancy. He shared stories from his 20-year career in journalism and his work in public relations. Alun spoke about the importance of English and reading. He showed how strong communication skills can lead to success in many careers. His talk linked closely to the school’s Careers Curriculum.

Peter ‘The Speaker’ is an entrepreneur who appeared on Dragons’ Den. He is known for his powerful speaking and work with young people, especially those who are neurodiverse. Peter explained how English and clear communication helped him build his business and connect with audiences.

Students enjoyed hearing real-life stories. They saw how English skills can lead to many opportunities—from reporting global news to pitching for investment and speaking up for causes. The session included practical tips, a lively atmosphere, and a Q&A. It highlighted how English can open doors in both education and future careers.

A big thank you to Alun and Peter for sharing your time and experiences.
