To mark National Careers Week (2–7 March), we proudly kicked off our programme of activities with a dynamic and engaging Year 7 assembly. As part of this nationwide celebration of careers education, we welcomed colleagues from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, who immediately captured students’ attention with their expertise and enthusiasm.

First and foremost, the team delivered important fire safety advice, reinforcing practical steps students can take to keep themselves and their families safe. However, the session went far beyond prevention. They also introduced students to the wide range of careers available within the fire service — from frontline firefighters to control room operators, fire safety inspectors and specialist support roles. As a result, pupils began to see how varied and accessible this profession can be.

Throughout the assembly, students listened carefully, asked thoughtful questions and engaged confidently with the visiting team. In doing so, they developed a clearer understanding of the skills required for a career in emergency services, including teamwork, resilience, communication and quick decision-making.

Meanwhile, a standout moment came when Mr Cashion stepped forward to try on a firefighter’s uniform. Not only did this provide a memorable photo opportunity, but it also brought an added sense of realism and excitement to the session — much to the delight of Year 7.

Importantly, National Careers Week encourages schools across the UK to connect students with employers and industry professionals. By creating meaningful encounters like this one, we actively help our students broaden their horizons, raise aspirations and begin thinking seriously about future pathways.

We look forward to continuing our National Careers Week activities over the coming days and sharing further insights as our students explore the many possibilities ahead.
