From September 2026, important changes are being made to Free School Meals (FSM) eligibility. Families are encouraged to review the new criteria and check whether they need to submit a new application.
The current transitional protections will end on 31 August 2026, meaning all families who receive Free School Meals should have their eligibility re-checked to continue receiving support where eligible.
The new system introduces two categories:
- Targeted FSM – for households earning £7,400 or less on Universal Credit or receiving certain qualifying benefits. This includes access to Free School Meals, school transport assistance (where applicable), Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) funding, and additional Pupil Premium funding for schools.
- Expanded FSM – a new meal-only entitlement for other Universal Credit households that do not qualify for Targeted FSM. This provides Free School Meals but does not include the additional support available through the Targeted scheme.
Key dates
- Applications opened: 24 June 2026
- Summer 2026: Families should complete mandatory eligibility re-checks.
- 31 August 2026: Transitional protections end.
