Wem Celebrates Sporting Talent at First Awards

The Wem Sports and Social Association hosted its inaugural Sports Person of the Year Awards at the Annual Parish Meeting on 13th March, recognising outstanding local athletes. All of the students attend The Thomas Adams School and Sixth Form.

In the Under-15 category, Isaac Vickery claimed the top prize. Already the UK Under-14 Cyclo-Cross Champion, he will compete in the European Championships this year. Ralph Davies (cricket) and Sam Parry (tennis) received Highly Commended awards.

The Over-15 category winner was Abigail Ward, an equestrian vaulter who represented Great Britain in the European Championships last year. Unable to attend due to GB training, she was honoured in her absence.

Winners received trophies donated by Princes and £50 cash prizes sponsored by local businesses. All nominees were awarded certificates.

Following the event’s success, organisers hope to make it an annual celebration of Wem’s sporting talent.
