The Purpose of Governance in a Multi-Academy Trust (MAT)

Local Governance

Governance within a Multi-Academy Trust is vital to ensuring effective leadership, accountability, and engagement across all schools in the trust. The board of trustees holds ultimate responsibility for guiding the trust’s vision and ensuring high-quality, inclusive education for every pupil.

Key functions of

The Board of Trustees:

  • Strategic Leadership:
The board defines the trust’s vision and values, promoting a culture of excellence and inclusion aligned with its charitable objectives. It sets the overarching strategy and decides which governance responsibilities are delegated to local governing bodies.
  • Accountability and Assurance:
The board maintains strong oversight of the trust’s operations and educational outcomes. This includes monitoring pupil welfare, ensuring the responsible use of funding, safeguarding the trust’s assets, and maintaining high standards of financial and estate management.
  • Stakeholder Engagement:
The board oversees relationships with parents, schools, and communities, ensuring that decisions reflect meaningful consultation and engagement.

Role of Local Governing Bodies (LGBs) within the Trust

Within each school in the Trust, the Local Governing Body is responsible for scrutinising school-level decisions, driving ongoing improvement, and overseeing the policies and procedures that enable effective daily operation. While the Board of Trustees retains ultimate governance responsibility, it delegates certain duties to the LGB to ensure close, context-specific oversight.

LGBs monitor and evaluate school activities in line with their terms of reference, acting as the vital link between the school and the Trust’s wider governance. Each school remains accountable to its local community, with a shared commitment across the Trust to delivering outstanding education for all pupils.

Local Governors serve a critical role:

  • They support and challenge school leaders, focusing on the specific needs and context of their school.
  • They act independently and in the best interests of both their school and the Trust as a whole.
  • They serve as ambassadors, promoting the Trust’s ethos, values, and mission, while drawing on their skills and expertise to add value.
