I chose Thomas Adams Sixth Form because I was so attracted to the sense of community. The combination of the inclusivity from the boarding house as well as the staff I met on the open day made me feel like the Sixth Form was more than a school, but a community and somewhere I felt I would be truly comfortable in, socially and academically to help me reach the goals I wanted to achieve.

What surprised me most about my sixth form experience was how much support was given to us. When I left Year 11, I thought I would no longer have the same level of staff support. However, I was so surprised at how active Thomas Adams is in providing information and the steps for my future plans. Through year group briefings with information and guest talks on different career options to help with UCAS proceedings and work experience, I was surprised to never feel nervous about what can be a really stressful couple of years, due to this information, help and hard work of the teachers.

The support both academically and personally the Sixth Form offer is amazing and makes the process of A-levels much easier. Academically, because the classes are smaller, you build a bond with your teacher finding the balance of trust and confidence. As well as this, through completing past papers and essays in class and the repetition of this, academic support becomes a way to not to criticise but bring your skills to the best of their abilities. Personally, at Sixth Form, support reaches out to all. Not only are you able to request private meetings with professionals on mental health, but through the staff in the study hub, personal support becomes less recognised as on a stressful day, seeing the friendliest of faces unconsciously gives you more personal support than you know you need.

The subjects I studied were English Language, English Literature and History, which I loved because for wanting to study Law, they all drew in contextual connections and academic skills. Something I loved was that in each subject, 20% of my grade was built from coursework, whether a language investigation or a paper on the Irish Independence. This allowed me to build academic independence but also take the edge off exam pressure. I also had the opportunity to do my EPQ, allowing me to build transferrable skills for a career, but show my personal academic interests in an essay (or artifact) that I found helped show universities more about me.

Since joining Thomas Adams, my confidence has grown due to the amount of social and academic opportunities. Having the opportunity to join the Student Council and become Head Student, meant not only did my confidence grow doing school assemblies and attending the Draper’s Ball in representation of the school, but also through advocating my opinions. The sense of community inside and outside the classroom, for me, meant my confidence grew due to not only arguing my points in class, but also through the friendliness of everyone. It was because of this that the school setting felt comfortable, allowing me to express and build my self-confidence.

Rosie, Year 13 Sixth Form Student

My advice to Year 11 students who are thinking about applying to Thomas Adams Sixth Form is to engage to all the opportunities there is on offer as they can be personally and socially life changing. As well as this, Thomas Adams I feel offers more support and care than imaginable for a place of education, as the Sixth Form finds a balance between support and community to student independence; something I feel is so important for A-level social and academic support.
