A-Level

Politics

Exam Board – Pearson Edexcel, Subject Leader – Paula Edwards

Politics at Thomas Adams Sixth Form explores how power works in the UK and worldwide. You will study democracy, political ideologies, human rights, and global governance, developing the skills to analyse information, form persuasive arguments, and debate major political issues with confidence.

Year 12

UK Politics and Government

In Year 12, your studies focus on the foundations of political life in the UK. You will examine democracy and participation, exploring voting systems, political parties, and the role of the media in shaping public opinion. You will analyse the impact of pressure groups and other key influences on political decision-making, while also delving into core ideologies such as Liberalism, Socialism, and Conservatism, comparing their differing perspectives on the state, society, and the economy.

A significant part of the year is devoted to understanding the UK constitution and the workings of parliament, the Prime Minister, and the Cabinet. You will study how these institutions interact, considering real-world examples of leadership and political decision-making. The introduction to Nationalism provides an opportunity to engage with major thinkers, explore debates around identity and sovereignty, and evaluate the implications for domestic and international politics. Alongside classroom learning, debates, case studies, and independent research will help you develop sharp analytical and evaluative skills.

Year 13

Global Politics

Year 13 takes you beyond the UK to investigate the complexities of global politics. You will study how intergovernmental organisations such as the UN, NATO, and the World Bank address major challenges, including conflict resolution, poverty, human rights, and climate change. The course encourages you to critically assess how effective these bodies are in delivering solutions, and to examine the role of powerful states such as the USA, China, and Russia in shaping international affairs.

The theme of globalisation is explored in depth, looking at its economic, political, and cultural dimensions and how it influences shifts in global power. You will also develop a strong understanding of international relations theory, including realism and liberalism, and use these frameworks to analyse the actions of states and international actors. By the end of the year, you will be adept at applying theory to real-world events, evaluating the effectiveness of international cooperation, and presenting coherent, well-supported arguments. Assessment is through formal written exams, where you will respond to source-based questions and extended essays requiring detailed evidence and analysis.
