Year 12
Foundations in Sport and Exercise Science
In your first year, you will explore the essential anatomy and physiology underpinning sports performance. You will study how the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems function, alongside the fundamentals of energy systems. This scientific understanding is assessed through a written examination at the end of Year 1, with opportunities to re-sit in Year 2.
You will also develop practical expertise in fitness training and programming for health, sport, and well-being. This involves screening and lifestyle assessments, designing fitness programmes, and understanding training methods that support client health and performance goals. Assessment is through a research-based written task, requiring you to interpret data and apply it to practical fitness planning. These modules lay a strong foundation in both theoretical knowledge and applied skills, essential for progression into more specialised areas in your second year.
Year 13
Applied Sport Performance and Professional Practice
The second year focuses on professional development and applied sport performance. You will investigate career pathways within the sports industry, completing a personal skills audit, action plan, and interview preparation. This reflective and professional approach is complemented by optional specialist units that allow you to tailor your learning to your interests.
You may choose to develop leadership skills in sport, studying what makes an effective leader and practising techniques for managing teams and activities. Alternatively, you could focus on the application of fitness testing, learning to safely conduct assessments across multiple components of fitness.
The curriculum also includes sports psychology, where you will explore the mental aspects of performance and strategies to enhance focus, motivation, and resilience. Practical performance forms a key part of this year, giving you the opportunity to apply your knowledge of tactics, rules, and skills in both individual and team sports.
By the end of Year 13, you will have gained a thorough understanding of both the science and professional practice of sport, along with the leadership, communication, and analytical skills valued by employers and universities.
