Religious Studies

Exam Board – OCR, Subject Leader – Elizabeth Badger

Religious Studies at Thomas Adams Sixth Form explores Philosophy, Ethics and Theology, tackling some of life’s most challenging questions. You will examine ultimate questions, study the beliefs and practices of religion, and explore moral issues relevant to the modern world. This course is ideal for those with an enquiring mind who enjoy debate, critical thinking, and considering ideas from different perspectives.

Year 12

Philosophy, Ethics and the Foundations of Theology

In your first year, you will build a strong foundation in the three key strands of the subject. In Philosophy of Religion, you will tackle questions such as “What is real?”, “Where does the world come from?” and “Why does God allow suffering?”. You will evaluate arguments for and against the existence of God, explore the nature of religious experience, and consider whether concepts such as the soul or the afterlife are coherent.

Ethics will introduce you to major normative theories, including Situation Ethics and Kantian Ethics, and you will apply these to complex moral issues such as euthanasia, sexual ethics, and business practices. You will also explore the use of ethical language and developments in moral philosophy, including meta-ethics and the role of conscience.

This year also introduces you to theology by examining how beliefs, values and teachings shape religious identity, and how historical events influence modern faith communities. Through class discussions, debates and independent research, you will develop the analytical and evaluative skills needed to examine religious, philosophical and ethical claims with precision.

Year 13

Advanced Theology and
Applied Philosophy

In your second year, you will deepen your knowledge by studying a religion in greater detail, exploring its sources of wisdom and authority, key beliefs, and significant theological developments. Topics may include the person of Christ, feminist theology, liberation theology, and religious pluralism.

You will build on your philosophical studies by evaluating complex arguments on the problem of evil, the coherence of religious language, and contemporary debates on metaphysics and epistemology. In Ethics, you will critically assess how moral theories respond to new challenges in science, politics, and society.

Throughout the year, you will refine your ability to construct clear, well-reasoned arguments, supported by evidence from scripture, tradition and philosophical thought. Assessment is through three formal written exams, each worth one-third of the final A level, ensuring you are well prepared for further study in philosophy, law, theology, politics or other disciplines where critical thinking and ethical reasoning are valued.
